Recently, DeepSeek has overtaken rival ChatGPT to become the top-rated application in Apple’s App store in the United States. Does this mean that DeepSeek is better?
Well, let’s first start by introducing DeepSeek. DeepSeek is a Chinese AI company that builds open-source large language models (LLMs). A LLM is a type of artificial intelligence that can generate or predict human language by using large datasets through machine learning techniques.
Language Support is another important differentiator. DeepSeek is a Chinese company. It has a strong focus on Chinese language and culture. On the other hand, ChatGPT has a global focus on supporting multiple languages across the world.
Like DeepSeek, ChatGPT is also a large language model. The key difference between the two AI’s lies in their primary focus: while ChatGPT is designed for engaging conversations and creative text generation, DeepSeek is more focused on accuracy and detailed analysis, especially when tackling technical tasks like data analysis and coding. DeepSeek often delivers more precise and thorough responses with an emphasis on factual correctness.
But what do those differences mean to us? As a high school student at PCDS who wants help, for example, outlining a primary source essay for US History class, which AI is better? To answer that question, I asked both ChaptGPT and DeepSeek. Here are the answers:
ChatGPT:
If you need help with structuring, writing, and analyzing a primary source, ChatGPT is the better choice. If you need to process raw historical data in large amounts, DeepSeek might offer an edge.
DeepSeek:
If you need general writing assistance, brainstorming, or help with structuring your essay, ChatGPT might be the better choice due to its flexibility and conversational nature.
If you need more specialized academic support, particularly with primary source analysis and integration, DeepSeek could be more suitable.
Eagle Exchange Tip:
In deciding which AI to use, also consider that ChatGPT doesn’t have access to archives, so while it may be able to provide the full text of some historical documents, you are better off using DeepSeek for primary sources.
